About
Meet Steve Angell, Licensed Professional Counselor
Welcome to Abraxas Counseling LLC! Counseling is a therapeutically intimate and vulnerable relationship between the client and therapist. While counseling is always about helping improve the life and well being of the client, it sometimes helps to know a little about the therapist you're working with.

I was born and raised in Utah, and lived there for most of my life until I moved to Lander in 2021 with a goal of living a slower life, and to bring mental health services to a more rural community. I am the father of 4 adult children, so I now enjoy a quiet life here with my two dogs - Wallace and Garnet. I have come to appreciate our fantastic community, as well as the common challenges that many of us face. In my spare time, I enjoy motorcycling, hiking, rockhounding, travel and reading.

My specialties are largely based my own lived experiences, as well as a constant desire to seek and better understand myself. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was a wee lad, so I am passionate about helping others with ADHD to better understand all the sneaky ways it can show up in life. I'm also a veteran and former first responder, so I bring a unique perspective to therapy for those that may feel resistant to getting help, or may feel that no one can understand their challenges. If this sounds familiar, I got your back and we'll figure things out together.

Experience
Therapeutic Approach
My approach to therapy is best described as informal and collaborative, which is just a fancy way to say I'm not really fancy or formal at all. I work with several different approaches to therapy, however I am rooted in a Depth perspective, which focuses on the inner and unconscious processes that seem to bubble up in ways that we later regret, or we struggle to understand why we act and think the way we do. I also rely often on therapy that is based on Attachment, which are the patterns we learned as children when forming relationships with our parents, or sadly a lack of parental figures in our lives. I also use common forms of therapy, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Family Systems, Person-Centered Therapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and several others.
